From the beginning, we recognized a common problem facing collectors and families with large transportation libraries. Traditional book buyers may purchase entire collections at wholesale prices, while general auctions often combine dozens of books into large lots because individually cataloging hundreds—or thousands—of titles requires an enormous amount of time.
Rail & Road took a different approach.
Our dedicated transportation book auctions were built around a simple idea: whenever practical, individual books should have the opportunity to find the collector looking for that particular title. Matched sets and related titles may be grouped when it makes sense, but we don’t believe dividing a carefully assembled transportation library into boxes of assorted books should be the only practical way to bring it to market.
We Built a Better System
Selling books individually only works if collectors can find the books they’re looking for.
In 2026, Rail & Road invested in custom cataloging software designed specifically to improve the way large transportation libraries are brought to auction. In addition to identifying titles and authors, our system can retrieve detailed ISBN-linked information for many books, including published descriptions.
The result is a much richer, more searchable auction catalog.
Instead of requiring bidders to browse hundreds of titles one at a time, collectors can search broadly by subject or focus their search around the railroads, automobiles, aircraft, ships, locations, manufacturers, authors, eras, and other subjects that interest them.
A railroad collector may be searching for material about a particular railroad without knowing the titles of every book written about it. An aviation collector may be interested in anything concerning a particular aircraft or airline. A maritime historian may be looking for books relating to a particular steamship line.
The more information contained in the catalog, the more opportunities there are for the right collector to discover the right book.
For us, this investment reflects a larger philosophy: transportation books shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought simply because they’re time-consuming to catalog. We’ve built a system specifically designed to handle them.

Hundreds—or even thousands—of books present a very different challenge from selling a typical collection. Determining what each title is worth, creating individual listings, communicating with buyers, packing orders, and shipping books one at a time can quickly become a substantial undertaking.
You don’t need to catalog your library before contacting us.
We meet consignors where they are. Start with a phone call, send us an email and a few overall photographs of the shelves, or schedule a video call and walk us through the collection. For a large library, a handful of photographs or a simple video walkthrough can often tell us considerably more than a written inventory.
We’ll take the time to understand what you have, answer your questions, and determine whether the collection is a good fit for one of our transportation book auctions.
From Your Shelves to a Searchable Auction
Once a transportation library arrives at Rail & Road, our team handles the work.
Books are sorted and organized, then processed through our cataloging system. Titles, authors, photographs, and—when available—ISBN-linked information and published descriptions are incorporated into the auction catalog, giving bidders multiple ways to discover material matching their interests.
We determine which titles should be offered individually and when matched sets or related books make more sense together. From there, we handle the auction, payment, packing, and shipping to successful bidders.
For the consignor, that means one collection and one auction company—not hundreds of individual listings, buyers, boxes, and shipments.
