Sound It & Sell It!™ Live Steam Whistle Program
Rail & Road Auctions is proud to continue our Sound It & Sell It!™ whistle program—giving collectors the opportunity to both hear and see railroad whistles under live steam before they sell at auction.
2026 Planning Underway
Planning is now underway for our 2026 private live steam whistle session, expected to take place in August or September aboard the legendary Nickel Plate Road No. 765. While final details are still being confirmed, we’re already accepting consignments for this year’s event.
Every whistle accepted into the program will be professionally tested and recorded under live steam before being offered in our October 2026 Railroad Auction.
We already have a handful of outstanding whistles waiting in our warehouse—add yours to what is shaping up to be another exceptional offering.
How It Works
Private Live Steam Session
Each consigned whistle will be professionally mounted to a live steam locomotive and blown under steam, just as it was originally designed to operate.
Consignor Invitations
Consignors with signed contracts will be invited to attend the whistle session and watch their whistle come to life. For safety reasons, all whistles will be operated by qualified personnel, and attendees must remain on the ground and off the locomotive.
Professional Photography & Video
Rail & Road will professionally photograph and record every whistle under steam, providing bidders with an authentic representation of both its appearance and sound.
Featured October Auction
Every whistle participating in the program will be prominently featured in our October 2026 Railroad Auction, complete with photographs, live steam videos, and detailed catalog descriptions.
Why Sound It & Sell It?
Railroad whistles were built to be heard—not simply displayed on a shelf.
For years, Sound It & Sell It!™ has consistently produced exceptional auction results by allowing bidders to experience each whistle as it was intended. Hearing a whistle perform under authentic live steam gives buyers greater confidence while showcasing the tone, character, and quality that simply can’t be conveyed through photographs alone.
The results speak for themselves. Whistles featured through this program have realized prices ranging from approximately $1,000 to more than $11,000, depending on rarity, condition, and desirability. Simply put, good whistles bring good money, and offering them with documented live steam testing only adds to their appeal.
If you’ve been considering selling a whistle, there’s no better way to present it to serious collectors.
