A Passion For Railroad History

Railroadiana is where the Rail & Road story began. From the steam era through today’s railroads, we specialize in the artifacts that preserve the history, craftsmanship, and identity of America’s railroads.

While trains still roll across the country, much of what made earlier generations of railroading distinctive has disappeared from everyday view. Lanterns and signals have been replaced, china and silver have left the dining cars, depots have closed, and locomotives that once defined an era have disappeared from the rails.

What remains is preserved in the collections assembled by generations of railroad employees, historians, enthusiasts, and collectors. Part of our mission at Rail & Road is to keep that history alive by connecting these collections and artifacts with the people who will appreciate and care for them next.

Rail & Road was born in a garage with a simple idea: bring greater specialization, better presentation, and more personal service to the railroadiana auction market. What began as a small operation built around a passion for railroad history has grown into the largest-volume railroadiana auction house in the United States, serving collectors and consignors across the country.

We’re proud of where we started. Growth has changed the size of our auctions and the collections we’re capable of handling, but it hasn’t changed the approach that got us here: show up, learn the material, care about the collections entrusted to us, and remain accessible to the people we serve.

Today, our team travels throughout the United States to professionally pack and transport collections of virtually every size. Once a collection arrives at our Lafayette, Indiana facility, we handle the entire process—from sorting and research through cataloging, photography, marketing, auction, payment, and shipping to successful bidders.

That combination of specialized knowledge, personal service, and nationwide reach has helped Rail & Road build an extensive audience of railroadiana collectors throughout the United States and around the world.
