Rail & Road Auctions is honored to present the lifetime automotive collection of James “Jim” Moloney of Santa Barbara, California.

Jim Moloney was a nationally recognized authority on classic American automobiles. He began his career with Chevrolet at the Los Angeles Zone Office before dedicating his life to public education, where he became a beloved teacher remembered fondly by generations of students.

A prolific automotive historian, Jim authored ten books on the American car hobby, including:

  • Bowties of the Fifties

  • Bowties of the Sixties

  • Chevrolet Chevelle & Monte Carlo 1964–1972

  • Early Ford V-8s 1932–1942

  • Encyclopedia of American Cars 1930–1942

  • Encyclopedia of American Cars 1949–1959

  • Ford Postwar V-8s 1946–1953 Photo Archive

  • Mercury Automobiles 1939–1959 Photo Archive

  • Studebaker Cars

In addition to his writing, Jim amassed a vast and diverse collection of scale model vehicles and automobilia. His sixteen-stall garage—once filled with classic cars—became affectionately known as the “Poor Man’s Harrah’s,” a nod to the famed National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada.

Jim was a fixture at automotive events across the country, from Hershey to numerous California concours, and was deeply involved in the Santa Barbara car community. A longtime member of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, his collection was featured in the May 2016 issue of Generator and Distributor.

At heart, Jim was a teacher, collector, and storyteller who loved to share his passion for the automobile with others. We are privileged to assist his family in passing this remarkable collection on to the next generation of caretakers.

Part 2- Sold Thursday November 13th, 2025

Rail & Road Auctions is proud to present Part 2 of the James Moloney Collection, a continued exploration of one of the most focused and well-curated private die-cast collections we’ve ever handled. Moloney’s passion for both the artistry of small-scale models and the heritage of the American automobile is again on full display in this session.

While this auction includes a handful of select 1:18 and 1:24 scale models, the core of the collection remains rooted in the 1:43 scale format that defined Moloney’s approach to collecting. This scale—favored by serious collectors for its balance of detail and display size—captures the essence of automotive design in miniature form. Moloney’s shelves were filled with hundreds of white-metal examples by Brooklin, Western Models, Mini Marque, Franklin Mint, and Danbury Mint, each chosen for its precision casting, paintwork, and historical accuracy.

On the full-scale side, the collection reads like a timeline of American motoring history. The Buick, Chevrolet, and Pontiac marques are particularly well represented, tracing GM’s golden era of design from the art-deco 1930s through the chrome-laden 1950s and beyond. Packard, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile models evoke the grandeur and engineering sophistication that defined pre-war luxury, while selections from Ford and Studebaker reflect the innovation and individuality of America’s independent automakers.

European refinement appears throughout as well, with select examples from Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Bentley, adding an international flair that complements the domestic lineup.

From coach-built classics to post-war cruisers, every model captures the spirit of its era—both in craftsmanship and presentation. As with Part 1, each piece reflects Moloney’s deep respect for automotive design and his lifelong pursuit of quality, accuracy, and preservation in miniature form.
