Rail & Road Auctions is proud to continue our Sound it & Sell it! whistle program—giving collectors the chance to both hear and see whistles under live steam before they sell at auction.

Special Update for 2025

The Whistle Blow at Kentucky Steam is planned to return in 2026. For this year, however, Rail & Road is excited to host a special private steam session in Indiana on a well-known operating steam locomotive.

Every whistle consigned through this program will be recorded under live steam in on October 9th, 2025 and then offered to the highest bidder in our January 2026 Railroad Auction. Whistles must be delivered to Rail & Road Auctions no later than October 7, 2025 or can be delivered the morning of the event but they must have the correct adapters pre-installed to be blown on live steam (adapted to 1 1/2″ female inlet)

How It Works in 2025

Private Steam Session – Each consigned whistle will be professionally mounted to a live steam locomotive and blown under steam, just as it was designed.

Exclusive Access –  While this event will not be open to the public, consignors with a signed contract will be invited to attend and watch their whistle come to life. For safety reasons, consignors will not be able to blow their whistle directly and must remain on the ground and off the locomotive during the session.

Professional Media – Rail & Road will capture video and photographs of each whistle in operation to maximize bidder confidence.

Auction Placement – All whistles featured in this session will be sold in our January 2026 Railroad Auction, with photos and videos included in the catalog.
